No one smells like a smoker. It’s true, and what’s more, they don’t realize how bad they smell. The reason they smell so poorly is that they have deadened the sensitivity of their nose. They literally can’t smell the smells that a non-smoker can.
The conscience is like a nose. It sniffs out the stench of sin. Someone who has deadened the sensitivity of his conscience literally can’t detect how morally bad he is. That’s why we need God’s Law. It stirs the conscience so that it can detect sin. When the conscience does its bloodhound duty, it shows us that we don’t smell like a rose, but that even our very best deeds stink to high heaven.
If you are have never repented of your sins and you are not trusting in Jesus Christ alone, you should realize that your lifestyle is an offense to a holy God. If you ignore your God-given conscience so that you can sin unhindered, all you are doing is storing up His wrath (see Rom. 2:3–11). See Isa. 64:6 and Rom. 3:10–20 to sniff out more details.
Isaiah 3:24 And so it shall be:
Instead of a sweet smell there will be a stench;
Instead of a sash, a rope;
Instead of well-set hair, baldness;
Instead of a rich robe, a girding of sackcloth;
And branding instead of beauty.
