This woman in 2 Samuel 14 was wise (see v. 2), and it is wise for anyone to see that life without Jesus Christ is empty futility. Without Him our lives are being poured out like water onto dry sand. It is good to help the ungodly see this by reminding them that death is waiting for them, and that it is just a matter of time until they are taken into eternity. Never underestimate the power of an unsaved person’s will to live. Such reasoning can often find a willing ear. How wonderful that, although sin banished the Adamic race from God’s presence, He made a way for sinners to be reconciled to Him through the cross: “God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself” (2 Cor. 5:19).
2 Samuel 14:14 For we will surely die and become like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. Yet God does not take away a life; but He devises means, so that His banished ones are not expelled from Him.
