God is the fountain of living waters (see Psa. 36:9; John 4:13,14; 7:37,38), yet a sin-loving world doesn’t desire Him (see Rom. 3:11). Instead, it drinks in iniquity like water. How then can we reach the lost with the waters of the gospel, when they have no thirst for it? We can do what Jesus did, and use the Law to bring the knowledge of sin (see Mark 10:17). A man has no desire for the forgiveness of Jesus Christ, until he understands that his sin will take him to hell. The Law convinces him of that (see Rom. 7:13) and helps him to see that he needs to be made right with God before the Day of Judgment. It causes him to hunger and thirst for righteousness, because without righteousness he will perish on the Day of Wrath (see Prov. 11:4).
