Skeptics argue that the Bible’s statement that the covenant of circumcision is to be everlasting (Gen. 17:7,10–11) contradicts verses saying that the circumcision is of no consequence (Gal. 6:15).
The means by which a man is justified in God’s sight isn’t through circumcision or any external observance, but only through faith in Jesus Christ. In Gal. 6:12, Paul points out that “not even those who are circumcised keep the law.” The outward symbolism is worthless for their salvation if their heart is not right with God: “For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God” (Rom. 2:28,29).
The “circumcision” that God desires is that of the heart, which occurs when a person is born again and receives a new heart and new spirit. That’s why Paul writes, “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation” (Gal. 6:15). See also Deut. 30:6.
